Who was St. Francis of Assisi? (1181-1226)
Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone was born in Assisi, Italy into a wealthy family. He later took the name Francis. After a conversion experience, he rejected that wealth and lived his life in simplicity, service, and poverty. He founded the Order of the Franciscans, who embraced his lifestyle. Today there are over 400,000 Franciscans worldwide living as priests (about 12,000), brothers, sisters, and lay people in 119 countries. He is a patron saint of Italy, animals & nature, ecology, and peace. He is also remembered for fostering dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
